Boys Varsity Soccer · Effort and Tempo Were Great But Achaeans Still Stumble to #16 Lebanon

The weather was wonderful for a great night of soccer and the Achaeans did not disappoint.  Herron came out from the start and matched #16 Lebanon step for step.  The defense kept 6’2″, 175 lb striker, Carson Burtron, in check for most of the first half.  Burtron had 21 goals coming into the game and was a constant threat.  Midway 1st half, Herron Senior, Christopher Wagner had a freekick outside the box going upper 90 near post and Lebanon keeper Keaton Newman was able to get a couple fingers on it and tip it over the bar.  With 11:23 left in the first half Burtron buried a 1 on 1 with the goalie after 2 Herron defenders failed to clear the ball.  At halftime, the mood was upbeat and positive.  Coach Durrett was happy with the way his boys were playing, especially Sophomore Center Defenseman, Jose Vallecillo.  He was going head to head with Lebanon’s star striker most of the half and held him in check.  With 25:33 left in the game, Burtron looked to be contained by two defenders outside the left corner of the box.  Burtron made 1 move and sent his shot over keeper Ben Drake in the goal upper 90, side net, far post.  Lebanon 2-0.  The Achaeans failed to give up.  Herron outshot Lebanon 16-12 on goal and 25-19 total shots.  Herron took more corner kicks than Lebanon as well.  Herron was definitely getting under the Tigers’ skin while the Achaeans kept their cool and played their game.  Even though Herron didn’t come out on top of this game on the scoreboard, it sure felt like better things are to come with Senior Night on Friday night at 6:30 at Kuntz Stadium and the 1st Round of Sectionals against Bishop Chatard on Monday at 5:30.
