We didn’t think this day would come because of the pandemic but it came. Speedway came in ranked #7 in class 2A in the State. They warmed up with energy and excitement. It would be easy for the Achaeans to just go through the motions on this cool evening. However, Herron brought the intensity as well. A back and forth game through the 1st half, the game would remain scoreless through 40 minutes. In the 27th minute of the 2nd half, the Spark Plugs would get a free kick outside the box. The free kick sailed over the wall and clanged crossbar. But as bad luck would have it, the ball landed at the feet of a Speedway player crashing the net and the Achaeans found themselves down 0-1. Momentum would change quickly. Within two minutes of the goal, Freshman midfielder, Jack Wagner, would steal the ball and find Senior, Jaden House. House would dribble half the length of the field by a couple defenders before cutting inside and being taken down in the box. House would score from the mark to tie the game up. The Achaeans were not going away. With every defensive clear, save or hustle causing turnover, cheers would become louder and louder as the seconds continued to tick away. Herron looked poised and confident as the clock went to 0:00. Two seven minute overtime periods would go bay but the score remained 1-1. On to the penalty shootout!!!
Spark Plugs won the coin toss and chose to kick first. Each team would get five chances to score. The winner moves on to the 2nd Round vs Washington on Wednesday at 7:30. Achaeans’ sophomore goalie, Ethan Goodwin, would dive for the first shot but the ball would sneak under him. 0-1. Senior, Mason Litvan, was up first for Herron. With ice running through his veins, he nails it in the upper corner. 1-1. Plugs would score again. 1-2. Wagner is up next. He walks from the center circle to the mark. Seems to take hours. For a freshman, the pressure must be getting to him, right? POOF!!! 2-2. Goodwin in his first varsity high school sectional looks ready. He dives and makes the stop. Score is tied at 2-2 with the advantage going to Herron. House is in the number three spot. Plugs goalie has already faced House once in the game. Which way will House shoot this time? House sneaks it within the left post past the outstretched hands of the keeper. The crowd cheers as Herron is up 3-2 with 2 shots left by each school. Speedway shooter ties it up at threes. Senior, Kyle Breen, is up fourth for the Achaeans. With confidence, he hits the back post where the side net and back net come together. Achaeans can feel the magic in the air. All they need is a Spark Plug miss or a goal by Junior, Jahir Mancia Guajaca, in the final kick. Goodwin would make the diving deflection to preserve to victory. Achaean players would swarm the field and celebrate by the goal with Goodwin.
