The Herron Achaeans (11-4) celebrated their senior players by defeating Shortridge 13-0 on the softball team’s Senior Night.
All four seniors played critical roles in the victory: 2B Rose Desrochers-Hawkins drove in 3 runs and also scored 3 times, 3B Jaala Weaver-Young scored 2 runs on a hit and one hit by pitcher, and CF Autumn Stringer also scored twice. Senior SS Asha Johnson contributed a big hit during a 3rd inning rally and applied a sharp tag on the back end of a surprise double play started by 1B Bella Bazan in the 4th. The mostly senior infield also added terrific defense as the Achaeans made no defensive errors on the night.
While the seniors were terrific with their bats and gloves, the team’s freshmen made clear that Herron’s future is bright. Emma Bailey pitched a 1-hitter for the Achaeans and stuck out 7 en route to the complete game victory. Bailey is now 6-2 on the season with a 1.86 ERA. She has allowed zero earned runs in her last two games and has now struck out 98 batters in 60 innings.
In addition, freshman Cameron Cummins added a single, double, and triple in raising her batting average to .600. Cummins now has a team-best 17 extra base hits on the season.
Herron will open Sectional play on Monday at 5pm in a rematch against Bishop Chatard.
The Achaeans have won 7 of their last 8 games with the only loss coming against Bishop Chatard back in April.
